Washington Island is a island located just north of Door County and is comprised of several islands including Washington Island, Detroit Island, Plum Island, Rock Island and Pilot Island.
Landmarks
Plum Island — Former Coastguard Station that has become a nature reserve.
Jackson Harbor — Old fishing harbor that once served the island as the hub for the island commercial fishing.
School House Beach — Famous for it's beautiful crystal clear water and smooth rock beach.
HISTORY
Originally Washngton Island was inhabited by Native Americans, and then changed over to a French Trading Outpost. Later it was settled by Icelandic settlers who chose the island for it's fishing and farming.
